Yomi, or Yomi-tsu-kuni, is the underworld of the Shinto religion, even if it forms no part of Shinto theology and appears only in ancient myths as told in the 8th-century CE Kojiki, notably the story of the creator gods Izanami and Izanagi. Shinto is largely concerned with the here and now of the living so that Yomi, unlike say the Christian notion of Hell, has only a limited significance related to the physical decay of believers after death.

Yomi in Mythology

Yomi ('Land of Darkness'), also known as Ne-no-kuni ('Land of Roots') or Soko-no-kuni ('Hollow Land'), was imagined to be the place beneath the earth where the souls of the dead gathered. There were thought to be two entrances to Yomi, one, a mere hole in the ground in the province of Izumo blocked by a boulder, and another more dramatic entrance where all the seas plunge down into the earth.

Izanami & Izanagi

Yomi features prominently in two Shinto myths. The first involves Izanami and Izanagi, the gods who created the islands of Japan. The couple also parented many of the other gods; the birth of some came at a certain price, though. Izanami was terribly burnt when she gave birth to Kagutsuchi the fire god, and it is said that many more gods were born from her tears as she suffered from her injuries until, finally, she died.

Izanagi, unable to live without his beloved wife, rashly followed her down into the underworld. Unfortunately, he was unable to rescue her as she had already eaten food in Yomi and so was forbidden from returning to the realm of the living. However, Izanami pleaded with the gods to be made an exception of and made Izanagi promise that he would be patient and not try to see her in her present state. The process of release was long, however, and an impatient Izanagi could wait no more and so he attempted to see his beloved. He was in for a shock, though, for when he saw her, the body of the goddess was already decomposing. Izanami was more than displeased at her husband breaking his promise and seeing her in such a state, but worse, the Eight Thunders and the Ugly Females which came from Izanami's hair chased the god out of the underworld. In other versions, Izanagi flees in terror at the disgusting sight of Izanami. During his retreat, Izanagi stopped the pursuing Thunders by throwing his stick (kunado-no-kami) in their path and brandishing three peaches, a fruit thought to possess magical properties. On finally reaching the outside world, Izanagi blocked the entrance to Yomi with an enormous stone, and Izanami was left to her fate.

Fortunate to escape unharmed from such a terrible place, the god had to perform a cleansing ritual in the river Woto to rid himself of the impurities of Yomi. It was during these rituals that various gods were born: Amaterasu, the sun goddess, when he washed his left eye, Tsuki-yomi, the god of the moon, when he washed his right eye, Susanoo the storm god, when he washed his nose, and Shina-tsu-hiko, the god of wind, was born from Izanagi's breath. In addition, when he cast off his tainted clothes in the river a further twelve gods were born from the twelve pieces. In reference to this episode, the practice of harai or cleansing before entering a sacred shrine (jinja) has become an important part of Shinto ritual where cleanliness and purification are especially esteemed.

Susanoo & Okuninushi

The second myth to feature Yomi is the story of the gods Susanoo and Okuninushi. In some versions, Susanoo resides in Yomi alongside his mother Izanami, in a palace near the underworld's entrance. The storm god was banished there because he had shown excessive grief for the passing of his mother. Susanoo was visited one day by Okuninushi, a god and sixth-generation descendant of the storm god. Okuninushi was being troubled by his 80 brothers and so sought the advice of Susanoo.

On arriving at the palace Okuninushi was distracted by the beauty of Susanoo's daughter Suseri-hume and promptly married her. Susanoo was livid when he discovered what had passed without his permission and so he set a fearsome test for his new son-in-law. Okuninushi was required to sleep in a room full of snakes, bees, and centipedes, creatures strongly associated with Yomi. Fortunately, Suseri-hume saved her husband from his ordeal, but Susanoo next asked Okuninushi to comb his hair and check for lice as a mark of his respect. Okuninushi complied and found not lice but lethal centipedes crawling about his father-in-law's locks. Again, he was saved by his wife, who gave him red clay and nuts which he chewed and spat out, thus making it seem he was ridding Susanoo of his centipedes. When the storm god fell asleep, Okuninushi tied his hair to the rafters and he and Suseri-hume escaped back to the land of the living. With Susanoo's sword and bow, which he had stolen, Okuninushi was able to defeat his 80 brothers and set himself up as ruler of the world, a reign which lasted until Amaterasu sent down her grandson Ninigi to take his place.

Shinto: Life After Death

In no ancient Shinto textual source is it explained who exactly goes to Yomi and why. Some historians suggest that the concept of a life after death was not a familiar one to the ancient Japanese and it only took form with the introduction of Buddhism from China in the 6th century CE. Yomi certainly has a very limited place in Shinto thought where a life after death is only vaguely alluded to and where there is an absence of a general concept of punishment and reward for souls in the next life as found in many other religions. The only suffering of souls in Yomi, if indeed there is any at all, is their separation from their living loved ones. The noted Shinto scholar and theologian Hirata Atsutane (1776-1843 CE) explains Yomi and its limited significance thus,

The old legends that dead souls go to Yomi cannot be proven. Then it may be asked, where do the souls of the Japanese go when they die? It may be clearly seen from the purport of ancient legends and from modern examples that they remain eternally in Japan and serve in the realm of the dead governed by Okuninushi-no-kami. This realm of the dead is not in any one particular place in the visible world, but being a realm of the darkness and separated from the present world, it cannot be seen…

The darkness, however, is only comparative. It should not mistakenly be imagined that this realm is devoid of light. It has food, clothing, and houses of various kinds, similar to those of the visible world. Proof of this may be found in accounts…in which a person has occasionally returned to tell of the realm of the dead.

After death the soul leaves the body and resides in the area of the grave, a fact attested by countless accounts…of both ancient and modern times of miraculous occurrences by spirits in the vicinity of graves…Some say that the soul goes to the filthy realm of Yomi, but there is not a shred of evidence that this is the case. Tell us a little about your childhood, growing up, parents, brothers and sisters?

My growing up was fantastic because I have a good childhood upbringing. Playing dirty at times, with my age mates was one of the interesting fun I can remember. My family consist of my parents, 3 boys and a girl. Being the last child, I was really dotted on. My brothers introduced me to the cinema house and movies. I became a film freak, and despite my father objection to film watching became an ardent disciple thereby becoming interested in film and motion picture as a whole.

What was the first paying job ever that you had?

I worked in a Bank as a Banking officer.

How much were you paid per month and what were the responsibilities?

N2,500.00. I was only taking care of myself, mother and supporting my siblings.

What other jobs did you do outside Acting?

I invest in honest, viable and profitable businesses. I am what so others will call a business tycoon.

What made you go into the Acting career and when did you start Acting (year)?

The world of ‘film making’ got me hook, line and sinker, coupled with inner talent that was struggling within me then. I went through vigorous self teaching research on what acting was all about, via film watching, review magazines, flipping through articles that bother on film acting or film making, and when opportuned, visited film sets/locations. I started acting professionally in February 1995.

Who were your Idols/Models (Actors) in those days?

Whow! They are so many of them from different continents. My Nigerian influences were Moses Olaiya, Ade Love,, Hubert Ogunde, Lere Paimo, and Jab Adu. I also liked watching Jim Kelly, Jim Brown, Franco Nero, John Wayne, Leon Green, Fred Willianson (American actors) Fu Sheng, Cheng Sei, Carer Wong, Jackie Chan, Lo Lei, David Chang, Chen Kua Tai, Chen Kua Chun (chinese actors) Amitabh Bachan, Dhamendra, Pran, Vinod Khanna. Vinod Mehra, Ferozkahy, and Sunil Dutt (india actors).

What was your first role in Theatre, TV or Movies?

My first role was lawyer Tunde Smart, in the movie titled Bekunpe.

What was your major break-through role and in what film, series or play? My first major breakthrough role was as ‘Akintunde’, in the film Omolade.

What were the constraints you had to face and overcome as an up-and-coming young Actor ?

The first was not been able to negotiate my fee because the producer sees you as somebody he or she is trying to helping. They see the talent but no justification for negotiation.

How many films have you been involved with as an Actor to date?

15 FILMS OMOLADE (1995), TWISTED CONNECTION (1997), ORO MA SOKO (2002), ALE ARIWO (2003), OPA AGEMO (2004) and the very recent one TENI NI TENI (2004-08-12).

As a DYNAMIC, OUTSTANDING, ‘A’-List Actor, how have you managed to adapt to the different range of roles you have played in your career?

By doing my homework, a lot of research and studying people of different occupation and lifestyle I meet closely. Most importantly, I demystify myself before taking a role.

What is the most awkward or strangest role you have had to take/play in your career and why?

Playing a disabled persons role in Kunle Alajeseku. I wanted to be in the disabled peoples world and feel what they feel every time. The pain and agony they go through silently in my opinion can never be measured. I know because I have had a glimpse and believe me they deserve our care, attention and love.

What film have you been most proud to be involved with so far, and why?

JOMBO. I was proud to take the lead role in the film Jombo because it gave me the avenue to play a bad guy in a really sadistic way, far from how some actors have played the role in the past.

As an ‘A’-List Actor yourself, what other ‘A’-List Actors or Actresses have worked or collaborated with?
Dele Odule, Bob Manuel Udokwu, Adebayo Salami, Jide Kosoko, Sunday Omobolanle, Taiwo Hassan, Yinka Quadri, Funso Adeolu, Antar Laniyan, Yemi Solade, Saheed Balogun, Omotola Jolade Ekeinde, Faithia Balogun, Poyemi Ayeola, Babatunde Omidina and Sola Sobowale.

Did you at anytime want to quit your Acting career for something else or for a reason, and why (if any)?

I thought of quitting when I was ban from acting by my association (A.N.T.P) for having the effrontery to query the executive committee of non-chalant attitude towards artist welfare, and questioning the reason for the association (A,N,T,P) collecting money from producers before he or she could role camera without any support from the association. I basically felt that the executives in the association ‘ruled’ and didn’t ‘Lead’. The issue of members taking work permit before acting was also inclusive.

What is the motivation for you or what keeps you interested in this career every morning you wake up?

Firsly, because I enjoy what I am doing and its challenging. Secondly, because I strongly believe that better and brighter days are coming soon.

How important are our Nigerian roots, morals, values, knowledge and sense of wisdom to you and your works? Everything that has to do with my roots and culture is very important to me because it is what tells the outside world that I have an identity, and I try as much as possible to show that unique identity and wisdom to the outside world through films.

On the stories, scripts, or screen play of your films, and its impact on the Nigerian/African cultural values (home and abroad), how do you manage to harness, keep and pass them across in your films?

Basically, the three element of entertainment are to inform, educate and entertain, which we so much keep in our works (films) that anyone from any race would not want to learn. The way we dress, the way we speak and the way we relate to our fellow human creature is important to me.

What projects are you working on at the moment and with whom?

JOMBO II, with Binta Ayo Magaji. Another with Dimeji Ijaduade, and another with Bolaji Amosan (Mr Latin) friends with alpha vision.

Where do you see yourself in this career in the next five years?

Highest height with God’s support.

Where do you see the Nigerian movies industry in the next couple of years?

If all various fractured associations could come together under one umbrella then the sky will be a stepping stone not the limit to our peak. fractured When you are not working (Acting, producing, directing or making a film), what do you do or how do you pass the time?

I do a lot of thing, for example visiting places, hanging out with my friends, playing games, visiting the gym, writing, watching films and praying.

What kind of music do you listen to and who is your favourite musician?

Various forms of Music that suits my mood at the time, from High Life, Juju, Fuji, Gospel, R&B to Jazz. Some of the Artists I listen to are Yinka Ayefele, Lionel Richie, R Kelly and Remilekun Amos.

Is there an International Actor (American, British, Australian, African, etc.) you will want to work with if the opportunity presented itself?

MORRIS CHESNUT, DENZEL WASHINGTON, SHEMAR MOORE, MARTIN LAWRENCE, JAMIE FOX, SAMUEL L JACKSON.

What message do you have for your international fans in America, Europe, Africa and its Diaspora?

They should all keep spreading the good news now in the film industry, the emergence of Nollywood, and to stay tight with one another. Remember no matter where we go (Nigerians, Africans, Afro- Americans, Jamaicans, etc), we are brothers. I love you all.

For any reason at all, how would you personally want your fans to remember you?

I just want them to remember me for my good works, what more can a Man want!

  • Yoko: Yomi in the past was a subordinate of Yoko's in his group of thieves, pillaging and plundering villiages and domains under his leadership. They were partners in crime, bandits, but not close friends. Yomi was fool-hardy, headstrong, and eager to jump in to battle at the nearest opportunity. He acted on a whim, costing Yoko the lives of many cohorts and eventually forcing him to act for the good of his bandit outfit. He betrayed Yomi, ordering his assassination however the attempt failed but left him blinded, forsaken by the light.
    Yomi undoubtedly senses his old acquaintance Yoko's identity struggle, and initially intents to force Kurama's old self to the surface for his benefit, and to reforge the bond they had in the past. He states that he admires Kurama for all that he's done, and that he learned a lot from him. In some ways, Kurama served as Yomi's idol, and as the Three Kings saga progresses, we see that Kurama's opinion is greatly valued by Yomi. The two form something of a loose alliance, loose because Yomi makes sure he "protects" his investment in Kurama's counsel through blackmail. Kurama even betrays him when Yusuke proposes the Demon World Tournament by going back to being an individual demon and threatening to side with Yusuke (along with 6 others of Yusuke's friends) if Yomi didn't agree to it. During the Makai Tournament, Yomi seems to accept Kurama's decision to suppress his Yoko identity for his relationship with his human mother, as he has come to experience a similar bond with his son. Yomi offers assistance to Kurama after his battle with Shigure and the two part ways as friends at the end of the tournament, something that shouldn't have been possible given their past history.
    Yomi's clone of himself is in every way a son to him. He inherited Yomi's strong will and ambitious tendencies, along with his vices. Yomi takes it upon himself to impress onto Shura, the importance of knowing your enemy and yourself, and to not make foolish gambles with his life. He genuinely cares for Shura, whose birth formed what is undoubtedly the closest bond in Yomi's life. Shura even influenced Yomi's decision to compete in the Makai Tournament as an individual, which required his surrendering all his power.
    Seeing as Yusuke is the descendant of Raizen, Yusuke and Yomi were automatically enemies from the beginning. When Raizen died and Yomi and Mukuro were on the brink of war, Yusuke went to Yomi to introduce himself as the new king of Raizen's country. During the talk, Yusuke proposed the dissolution of the separate countries in favor of the Demon World Tournament to unite the Demon World under one ruler. At first, Yomi hated the idea, but had to go along with it when Kurama and 6 other subordinates who were all friends of Yusuke sided with Yusuke and Mukuro agreed to his terms. However, after feeling the power of Raizen's friends, Yomi grew excited about the tournament and came to respect Yusuke, seeing him as a friendly rival and not an enemy as Yomi initially saw him. He was happy to fight with Yusuke and felt there was a good chance that Yusuke would surpass him by the time of the next tournament.

Yomi was born on the 14th of July in 1981 (Millennials Generation). The first generation to reach adulthood in the new millennium, Millennials are the young technology gurus who thrive on new innovations, startups, and working out of coffee shops. They were the kids of the 1990s who were born roughly between 1980 and 2000. These 20-somethings to early 30-year-olds have redefined the workplace. Time magazine called them “The Me Me Me Generation” because they want it all. They are known as confident, entitled, and depressed.

Yomi is famous for being a Rock Singer. Japanese vocalist best known as the frontman of the visual kei rock band Nightmare. He also performs in the comedy-oriented side project Sendai Kamotsu. About Yomi

Yomi is a simple competitive card game that simulates a battle between two characters. Each deck represents one character and doubles as a regular deck of playing cards.

Each deck has 56 cards: 52 poker cards with markings to play Yomi, 2 Jokers, 1 character card, and 1 rules card. The 2-10 cards are attacks, blocks, dodges, and throws. Face cards are special moves, while Aces are super moves. Most cards have a different move along the top and bottom edges. The object of the game is to reduce the opponent's hit points to zero through winning combats and performing combos.

"Yomi" is Japanese for "reading", as in reading the mind of the opponent. [needs referencing] The Yomi card game is designed to distill the high-level mind games from fighting game tournaments into a simple card game that, itself, stands up to serious tournament play.

Yomi teaches you to pay attention to small clues that indicate how people think and act. Developing your ability to read other people and draw on your unconscious knowledge might give you an edge in other games and benefit you in other areas of life.


Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto


Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto (月読尊) or Tsukuyomi (月読), is the moon god in Shinto and Japanese mythology. The name "Tsukuyomi" is a compound of the Old Japanese words tsuku (月, "moon, month", becoming modern Japanese tsuki) and yomi (読み, "reading, counting"). The Nihon Shoki mentions this name spelled as Tsukuyumi (月弓, "moon bow"), but this yumi is likely a variation in pronunciation of yomi. An alternative interpretation is that his name is a combination of tsukiyo (月夜, "moonlit night") and mi (見, "looking, watching").

Unlike the myths of ancient Greece or Rome, the Japanese moon deity is male. This is clear in the earliest mentions in sources such as the Kojiki and the Man'yōshū, where Tsukuyomi's name is sometimes rendered as Tsukuyomi Otoko (月讀壮士, "moon reading man") or as Tsukihito Otoko (月人壮士, "moon person man").

Prologue
Yomi was in the hideout eating bean sprouts as usual until the unthinkable had happened, she had raised her voice in denial without thinking, no matter how many times she cried out it wouldn't change anything, the disastrous truth was in front of her eyes. She was tired of bean sprouts. She says this twice to make sure of her feelings and began to cry. It was true she understood she was tired of bean sprouts. She thought some people might think her situation was cruel and unfair, they were right. All her years of endless love for bean sprouts just turned out to be less than endless. She shouldn't even be able to fathom such a horrifying thought. But now that thought consumed her, she felt like a stranger to herself. She quietly murmurs to the bean sprouts before her they may have grown too close. Perhaps their affections grew with such intensity that it burned away and vanished into the air before they knew what to do with it. They spent their love too fast, when she first met them, every day became a song of bliss and satisfaction. She swooned to watch them grow, she gave thanks at every harvest. Her tongue rejoiced at every taste. But day by day, little by little, their passion and intimacy gave way to complacency and routine. And finally boredom. She says farewell to her sprouts and expected to start crying again. But she refused to do so she threw away all they gave her, they didn't need the tears of a selfish woman. She hid her face and ran. That's when she saw it. She could almost hear the bean sprouts asking her to stop. She turned and caught a glimpse of a flyer announcing a Super Dish Gourmet Cook-off. She realized this was what the bean sprouts wanted her to see. This tournament can be their fresh start. She understood, they were going to do this together. She didn't want them to be apart, she was going to enter the cook-off and what better way to spice up their love life.

First Round
Her first opponent was her teammate Hikage who noticed Yomi didn't seem happy. Yomi then flat out tells her she was tired of bean sprouts. Upon hearing this Hikage was taken aback and shouted out she couldn't comprehend. Yomi seeing her reaction asked her what that was about. Hikage then tells her if she had to guess it might've been shock. As she further points out Yomi bored with bean sprouts was impossible. Yomi asks her if she was raising her voice, Hikage says there was no way that was possible she couldn't say those things. Yomi asks her to calm down as she didn't say she was completely bored with them. Hikage asks her if she loved them and left them and began to feel sorry for them. Something Yomi agreed with so she was searching for a way to rekindle her love. Hikage hearing this says to her she was hurting more than they were Yomi tells her not to be sorry it was all because of her selfishness. Hikage having had enough chit-chat says for them to get this battle started she wanted to see Yomi's bean sprout dish. Yomi was in full agreement. And so the first round of the cook-off beings with Yomi winning. After the round Hikage says to her the thought she and the sprouts still get along well. Yomi understood and Hikage tells her breaking up is easy you could do that anytime. But she should take a good, hard look first and to think about their future together. It was her decision in the end she was just a bystander it was none of her business. But bean sprouts they were good to her. Yomi tells her she was right and thanks her. Hikage continues on about the feelings between a woman and her bean sprouts were complicated.

Fourth Round
Her next opponent was Ikaruga who calls out to her. She approaches her and tells her she knows about Yomi's current situation and goes on about how she was an outsider and had no business butting in between the two of them. However she's never seen her happier than she had been before. Whenever she saw her with bean sprouts she was envious, she always hoped that one day, somehow, someone will do for her what the sprouts did for Yomi. People came and went in life she understood, but even so. Yomi interrupts her asking her not to say anything further. Ikaruga apologizes she knew Yomi was in pain. Yomi tells her not to apologize her words reached her heart. Ikaruga hearing this decides it was best for them to move on and get on with why they were there. Yomi agrees with her. And so Yomi proceeds to beat Ikaruga in the next round of the tournament. After the round Yomi felt there was a path somewhere ahead. A path of intimacy between her and the bean sprouts. Ikaruga hearing this asks if that was so. She was very happy to hear that and begins to tear up. Yomi asks her why she was crying as this was her trouble and not Ikaruga's. Ikaruga tells her it was because it was so beautiful. Yomi proceeds to thank her it was because of her, she helped her feel this way. Yomi noticed she began to cry too. The two girls began to giggle. Ikaruga then wishes the two happiness and leaves. Yomi could finally see it. A bright future for herself and the sprouts.

Final Round
Her final opponent was Katsuragi. Who starts telling her to just forget about it and to just let the bean sprouts go. That's all she had to do. Yomi was surprised to hear this. Katsuragi tells her she was acting really girly, and to not be tied down to old ingredients. The world had tons of ingredients, even ones that weren't bean sprouts. Yomi agrees with her that it was true, she was definitely right. But among all the ingredients her bond was with bean sprouts. That is why she couldn't forget about them so easily. Katsuragi then tells her she'll make her forget about it and continues on about how the ramen she makes doesn't have bean sprouts, but it tasted freaking great. Yomi hearing this says it was impossible, a ramen without bean sprouts. Katsuragi tells Yomi to accept ramen without bean sprouts and to taste it. And finally ends off by telling Yomi to battle. And thus the final round of the tournament begins with Yomi emerging the victor.

Epilogue
Upon winning the tournament Katsuragi laments she blew it and began to think she shouldn't have skimped out on the bean sprouts. She then says noodles alone weren't enough for a competition she took the bean sprouts too lightly and tells Yomi to go ahead and laugh at her sorry ass. Yomi tells her she wouldn't and says that thanks to her she understood. Bean sprouts and her still had possibilities ahead. Katsuragi was surprised at what she was hearing, and with this Yomi says she could once again live together with the bean sprouts. Katsuragi hearing this says that everything is turning out alright. Yomi begins to thank her. She now had a way to reconcile with the bean sprouts. She began to perform the vision she saw during the battle against Katsuragi. She first decided to make ramen, she used various ingredients as the soup base and slowly created a golden soup. Even when the soup was done she didn't add noodles. Instead she threw bean sprouts, it was a new possibility: Bean sprout ramen without noodles. She put the noodle-less bean sprout ramen in front of her, she felt resistance. She took a sip of the soup and when she ate the sprouts. She shouted out it was delicious, the hot passionate love for bean sprouts blossoms within her. She felt the crunchy consistency, the watery texture. She felt the love for everything about them. There was still one more issue, the bean sprouts' feelings. She wanted to start over with them, but that didn't mean they'll want her back. Even if that happened she wouldn't harbor a grudge. She was the one who left them, she was the selfish one. She then asks them if they could start all over again and suddenly heard their answer. They forgave her a person like her. Tears began to flow from her eyes, but there was no time to start bawling. In order to make up for lost time she needed to eat more and more bean sprouts. But that was okay, it was wonderful even. Because she and the sprouts left all their troubles behind. She shouted out "Bean sprouts are unbeatable! Long live bean sprouts!"
